Tower Hamlets Council provides guidance to residents who require specialist equipment in their homes to support independent living with a disability. This may include enhancing safety with stair and grab rails, improving accessibility through ramps, widened doorways, or stairlifts, as well as adapting kitchens and bathrooms to meet individual needs.
During the assessment, the Council’s Occupational Therapy (OT) team will consult with Spitalfields Housing Association (SHA) to determine the scope of need. Learn more about OT assessments here.
Financial assistance for essential home adaptations is available through the Disabled Facilities Grant scheme, which helps make homes more suitable for disabled individuals.
Find out more about the disabled facilities grant here.
The responsibility for funding these adaptations varies depending on property ownership.
For disabled residents living in private accommodation, the council assists in applying for means-tested grants to cover the cost of necessary modifications.
Additionally, for individuals who are visually impaired, hard of hearing, or have other disabilities requiring special equipment or home adaptations, the local authority provides support. Eligibility for this assistance is determined through a personal needs assessment.
If you are thinking of making an application, please contact an SHA officer for assistance as certain sections have to be completed by SHA.
