Tenants can take several measures to help reduce fire risks inside their homes. Spitalfields Housing Association (SHA) also manage some homes in the London Borough of Newham, and our staff were shocked and saddened to hear about the recent incident on Napier Road, East Ham, where a family was hospitalised and three children tragically lost their lives. This underscores the importance of fire safety inside the home for all of us. Here are some practical steps to consider:

Electrical safety

Avoid overloading sockets:

  • Do not plug too many appliances into one socket or extension lead.
  • Use only one extension lead per socket and avoid daisy-chaining them.

Check electrical appliances:

  • Regularly inspect cords and plugs for wear and tear.
  • Ensure appliances are in good working order and replace faulty ones.

Unplug appliances:

  • Turn off and unplug appliances when not in use, especially those not designed to be left on continuously.

Cooking safety

Never leave cooking unattended:

  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking, especially when using oil or high heat.
  • Use a timer to remind you to check on food.

Keep cooking area clear:

  • Ensure flammable items like towels and curtains are away from the stove.
  • Clean cooking surfaces regularly to avoid grease buildup.

Smoking safety

Smoke outside:

  • If possible, smoke cigarettes outside to prevent indoor fire risks.
  • Distinguish of lighted cigarette in water.
  • Always use deep, sturdy ashtrays and ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished before disposal.

Heating Safety

Maintain heating equipment:

  • Ensure heaters are in good working condition and have them serviced regularly.
  • Keep flammable materials at least one meter away from heaters.

Use heaters properly:

  • Avoid drying clothes on or near heaters.
  • Do not use portable heaters while sleeping.

General fire safety

Smoke alarms:

  • Ensure all smoke alarms are working on every level of the home.
  • Test alarms monthly and replace batteries if not working or running low.

Plan and practice an escape route:

  • Know at least two ways out of every room.
  • Practice escape routes regularly with all household members.

Keep escape routes clear:

  • Avoid blocking exits with furniture or other items.

Fire-resistant furnishings:

  • Use fire-resistant or flame-retardant furniture and materials where possible.
  • Store flammable substances safely:
  • Keep flammable liquids in proper containers and store them away from heat sources.

Education and awareness

Educate household members:

  • Ensure everyone knows basic fire safety measures.
  • Teach children about the dangers of fire and how to respond in an emergency.

Report safety issues:

  • Inform SHA of any fire safety hazards or maintenance issues.
