£175 per person will be paid automatically to eligible residents
4,696 pensioners in Tower Hamlets – who were due to miss out on Winter Fuel Payments because of cuts will be eligible for a new grant being introduced by Tower Hamlets Council.
The Winter Fuel Payment, worth £175 per person, will be paid automatically to eligible residents in December. In total, Tower Hamlets Council has set aside almost £1 million for the fund. The Winter Emergency Fund was recently agreed at a Cabinet meeting to provide financial support to pensioners impacted by the changes in eligibility for the Winter Fuel Allowance.
If you are eligible, you will receive a letter just before winter. If you do not get a letter but you think you’re eligible, you can check if you need to make a claim or call 0800 731 0160.
In addition, there will be an effort to ensure an extra 4,304 pensioners in Tower Hamlets – who are eligible for pension credit but currently not claiming – are in receipt of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) payment.
Through these two schemes, Tower Hamlets Council will be supporting almost 9,000 pensioners throughout winter.
