Pests such as mice, rats, cockroaches, and bedbugs can cause stress, health risks, and damage to your home. At SHA, pest control services are handled by Tower Hamlets Council instead of SHA directly. This means it’s important to know who to contact and what you can do to help prevent infestations.

Who deals with Pest Control?

  • Landlord/ housing association: responsible for keeping the property in good repair (for example, fixing broken vents, filling holes in walls, or repairing leaks that may let pests in).
  • Local Council: Provides pest control services directly to SHA residents. If you have a pest problem, please contact your council’s pest control team to arrange treatment.

What you can do as a tenant

Here are some simple steps to help prevent pests in your home:

  • Keep food sealed: store food in closed containers and clear away crumbs.
  • Dispose of waste properly: tie rubbish bags securely and use bins with lids.
  • Avoid clutter: pests like hiding in piles of clothes, papers, or boxes.
  • Check for entry points: report any gaps, holes, or broken vents to SHA through the ‘report a repair’ online portal.
  • Stay clean and dry: fix dripping taps quickly and wipe away spills to reduce water sources for pests.

What to do if you spot pests

  • Act quickly: pests spread fast, so don’t wait.
  • Report to your council: contact Tower Hamlet Council’s pest control service for treatment.
  • Inform SHA: let us know too, especially if repairs are needed to stop pests getting in.
  • Keep records: note the date you reported the issue and, if possible, take photos.

Remember

  • Preventing pests is easier than treating them – good housekeeping helps.
  • Both the tenant and the landlord must ensure pests do not enter your home.
  • The local Council’s pest control team handles treatment for SHA-managed homes.
  • Reporting problems early makes it easier and quicker to resolve them.

A pest-free home is a healthier, safer home. If you notice signs of pests, report it straight away to Tower Hamlets Pest Control service, and SHA to manage any further repairs.
