SHA acknowledges Tower Hamlet’s climate emergency declaration and seeks to improve services where energy can be reduced, and improvements can be made. We welcome continued feedback and suggestions from our residents.
Sustainability
Sustainability is an important consideration for SHA, as it play a significant role in providing an efficient service for our residents.
- Energy Efficiency: SHA often prioritises energy-efficient measures in their properties, such as installing insulation, energy-efficient appliances, and LED lighting. This helps to reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions, and decrease utility costs for tenants.
- Renewable Energy: Where possible, SHA will consider investing in renewable energy sources, such as solar panels or wind turbines, to generate clean energy for their properties, such as in our Pedley Street homes. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels and contributes to a more sustainable energy mix.
- Sustainable Construction and Retrofitting: SHA seeks to incorporate sustainable building practices when constructing new housing developments or renovating existing properties. This can include using eco-friendly materials, implementing energy-efficient design principles, and integrating green spaces or rooftop gardens.
- Water Conservation: SHA will look into water conservation, such as installing water-efficient fixtures, low-flow toilets and faucets, and implementing rainwater harvesting systems. These measures help to reduce water consumption and preserve this valuable resource.
- Waste Management: SHA work with the local authority to implement recycling programs and provide recycling facilities to encourage proper waste disposal and reduce landfill waste. They also signpost and notify tenants about waste reduction and recycling practices.
- Sustainable Transport: SHA promote sustainable transportation options by providing bicycle storage facilities, promoting public transit accessibility, and encouraging car-sharing or electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This reduces carbon emissions from transportation and enables healthier, more sustainable modes of travel.
- Community Engagement: SHA engage with their tenants and the local community to raise awareness about sustainability and encourage sustainable practices. This can involve organising educational workshops, supporting community gardens, or collaborating with local environmental initiatives. This usually happens at SHA’s community centre, the Hason Raja Centre in Whitechapel.
- Environmental Certification: Where suitable, SHA seeks certification or accreditation from sustainability organisations, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) or BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) on recent builds. These certifications demonstrate a commitment to sustainable practices and provide benchmarks for ongoing improvement.
From now on, SHA will resource sustainable methods of living and review our priorities and local regulations to improve our sustainability record. SHA recognises the importance of sustainability and is actively working towards reducing its environmental impact while providing quality housing for our tenants.
